Olympics: CTF encouraged by councillors reconsidering

Author: Colin Craig 2018/04/04

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation applauded councillors Dianne Colley-Urquhart and Ward Sutherland today for indicating they’re reconsidering their support for the Olympics.

“The Olympics are fun to watch on TV, but many Calgarians can’t afford to see property taxes rise to pay to host the Games,” said CTF Alberta Director Colin Craig. “We can’t forget that the provincial government’s debt is already increasing by over $1 million every hour. Ottawa’s debt is increasing by $2 million per hour. There’s no money to pay for hosting the Olympics.”

The CTF recently polled its supporters across Alberta and found 87% oppose an Olympic bid; opposition was actually a bit higher in Calgary than outside of the city.

“We hope that Calgarians call and email their councillors and urge them to put the brakes on a bid – we just can’t afford the Olympics,” added Craig.
